Test Drive Meme

Welcome to the Halloween Town Test Drive.

This test drive is meant to provide those who are interested in applying to the game an opportunity to not only experience the setting and mechanics, but to interact with players and characters already in the game!

The threads on the Test Drive Meme may be used for both sample sections of the applications and those already in game may use the threads here to supplement up to ten comments for their AC regardless of whether the player you threaded with applied.

It is up to the discretion of each individual player on whether they would like to use what happens here on the Test Drive Meme as their IC intro into the game.

PLEASE REMEMBER: The monster your character picks will not be official until you are accepted into the game. This is your opportunity to try out all sorts of monster types until you find the one that suits you and your character best!

And without further ado:

"Welcome our dear guests! We've been waiting for you!"

The Prompts:

Prompt 1 - Arrival: Having just arrived to Halloween Town, you may feel a little queasy. That is entirely natural. You're in a giant circular room with whatever it is you may have brought with you. A very tall figure walks out of the shadows and he's incredibly pale... that is until you realize the hand reaching out to you is not bone-thin, oh no, it is actual bone. Meet the ruler of Halloween Town and the king of Halloween, Jack Skellington. He greets you with a big smile and exclaims with joy how happy he is that you made it and how much happier he is to see you, one hand held out in greeting and the other holding the Jack o' Laptop he has ready for you.

Perhaps you stay to listen to him explain what awaits you and he will then happily escort you outside into the town to provide you a quick explanation before he excuses himself to greet the other new arrivals, leaving you to explore the town. Or, perhaps, the mere sight of a skeleton was... not what you were expecting and you ran out screaming before he can get more than a "Hello-" out.

Either way:

Prompt 2 - The Town: Whether you ran out screaming or were guided out into the town, there are most certainly monsters and ghouls all about. If you were patient enough to wait for an explanation, you know that they are the residents of this holiday. If you ran out screaming? Well, you might be getting more than a few scares- we mean... stares. But the town is just waiting for you to explore! But something is strange. When you look into a mirror or see a glass you look just a tiny bit off. And perhaps you feel just a tiny bit different.

Maybe you don't even have a reflection and all you can feel at the moment is a deep need to feed. Surely someone can help you... provided you can stop screaming at the sight of the citizens long enough.

We wouldn't recommend attacking any of the citizens, however, newborn monster that you are. We wouldn't want you to be a spirit so early in your visit.

Prompt 3 - The First Door: You've now been in Halloween Town for several days and while the zombies eat brains and the vampires drink blood, no one has tried to attack you (unless you've attacked them first, of course). The mayor, driving in his car announces a town meeting! Everyone must come to the Town Hall, even our new arrivals. Jack and Sally explain that Easter is nearly here! And the Easter Bunny has been kind enough to invite you all to experience what it's like to get ready for the holiday! It is time to take your trip through the Hitherlands to the door of Holidays. The path is laid out with Jack o' lanterns and linked bat-light strings between the trees to guide you to the doors. Don't mind that rather ominous entrance, within is perfectly safe... well... at least we think it is. As you travel along the path, you'll come across all the doors, but the one you are seeking is the one currently open. Trying to open the other doors, be it with spells or with force will result in nothing. Do you go in? Do you head back to the town?

Prompt 4 - Easter Island: Welcome to Easter Island! You may need to squint at first, since it's so bright and colorful, the complete opposite of Halloween Town. But once your vision adjusts, you'll notice something... different. You will find you are no longer any monsters but instead you're- well... to put it quite plainly, you're adorable! You have been turned into the citizens of Easter Island! The Easter Bunny welcomes you warmly, quite surprised to see so many adorable newcomers! And you'll find, perhaps without surprise at this point, that you can understand him. So what does he have planned for you?

Prompt 5 - Easter Egg Hunt: No matter what cute, adorable, and fluffy animal or egg ghost you've been turned into, there is an Easter basket waiting for you to go on a hunt! Throughout the entire island, that's yours to explore, are all sorts of different colored eggs. Each differently colored egg offers you a special reward or a certain kind of magic.

If you find:

A red egg: Will make you more inclined to hug and cuddle with the next person you see.
A pink egg: Is a dark chocolate egg! Mmm chocolate.
An orange egg: Is a milk chocolate egg. Mmm more chocolate.
A yellow egg: Will suddenly turn into a small plush animal that replicates the animal you got turned into. It's so soft and fluffy.
A green egg: Will turn into a little plastic egg-bracelet or egg earrings. Don't lose them though, the Easter Bunny asked Lady Luck to imbue them with a tiny bit of luck.
A blue egg: Will make you burst out into song and you can't stop until you finish that song.
A purple egg: A couple extra Holidollars and you get to take that with you back to Halloween Town.

But perhaps an egg hunt isn't something you're interested in! That's completely fine, the citizens need a lot of help getting ready for Easter for people! There's all sorts of jobs you can do! There's egg painting, egg counting, egg gathering, and basket weaving! All of these jobs pay Holidollars and you're making holidays wonderful for children everywhere!

Just don't drop the eggs! We don't want to make more egg spirits! Dropping an egg will bring you a whole day of bad luck as well.

Ah, sure? If you want? I'm really trying not to think too hard about it, but maybe by that point I'll be more used to the idea.

[ Tucking his cap into the outside pocket of his bag, Ryousuke adjusts the strap on his shoulder and accepts Kuramochi's apology - even if he obviously sideeyes him a little. Don't think he doesn't know exactly what you're thinking, Kuramochi, but at least you're smart enough to not say that exact thought. ]

Understandable, I guess. There's a lot going on. [ He makes a vague gesture to signify the entire town, before he's rubbing his fingertips against the side of his neck, where he's got some scales coming in. They're a little itchy, but he thinks that might be because they're dry.

But he hums, an amused noise, and his smile ticks up at the corners.
] The skeleton man? Yes, I saw him. He was rather welcoming - he was the one that sent out the potion and the note.

It's only weird if you want to sit on them. I admit I don't quite get the appeal of looking for eggs in the grass, but it seems to hold a lot of cultural significance for the peo--err, animals here.

[stepping around to nudge two of them closer to his basket, trying not to step on any or break any in the process. being all tall gangly legs takes some getting used to, and he's not the most graceful.]

Well, at least it's an obvious symbol. New life, renewal...things like that? Oh, here.

[he uses his head and beak to tip the basket at an angle, so Sorey can get the eggs in more easily. teamwork!!]

[personal profile] theskyenceguy 2016-03-15 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
[now she feels like being patronized!!]

Hey, don't put it like that. Just because I'm not familiar with angels or demons or whatever doesn't mean I need to be babied.

[personal profile] theskyenceguy 2016-03-15 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's a freaky thing to think about at first, but it could be an excellent chance to gain some interesting scientific knowledge!

[she says, giving another glance around. She lets out a bemused noise] Especially not here with all these poor excuses.

[ Rather like the other new arrival, Ryousuke is adjusting to a few changes himself - similar ones, in fact. The scales on his body are a little itchy because of what he's assuming to be dryness, but he's fairly good at impulse control and has managed to tune it out for the most part. He's gone ahead and gotten himself a couple bottles of water, though, because after years of rigorous practice at Seido he knows exactly what will happen if he lets himself get dehydrated.

He probably shouldn't be drinking in a library, but he's not that bothered about it.

At least he manages to look up from the pamphlet about the school he's flipping through, before he runs smack into Mikleo's back. They're off a height, so he's sure that would have ended comically - and by comically, he thinks probably in disaster.
] Blocking doorways is generally frowned upon, I doubt that's changed because you're in a different world.

[Even as cute woodland creatures their teamwork is impeccable. He rolls the eggs into the basket, slowly so they don't crack, and lets the basket tip back upright]

Thanks. You think that's what it's meant to represent? It does make sense, especially with the spring weather. It doesn't explain all of the rabbits though.

Like...how to attach arms better? Or things in general...

[he guesses that's also relevant to her, or might be, but in kind of a messier way.]
oneandmikleonly: (said goodbye.)

Re: 5

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-03-15 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Not even Dezel ever mentioned rabbits hatching from eggs, so you've got me there. Your form has nothing to do with eggs, either.

[he lets out a satisfied quack when the basket tips up intact, and then tries to cover his beak in embarrassment, and fails horribly.]

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-03-15 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
[he doesn't quite jump -- he's gotten at least a little used to the idea of everyone in this place being able to see him as he is -- but he takes a couple of quick steps forward in surprise before turning. it very nearly looks 100% deliberate.]

I got a bit distracted...

Really. [ His tone, amused as it is, tacks on an unsaid I couldn't tell as he slips the pamphlet into one of his pockets. There's a soft laugh, in response to the very deliberate looking movements - and the surprise, because his sense of humor is a little sadistic - but he cranes his head instead of commenting so that he can take in the library. ]

I can see why. [ Ryousuke moves to take a very definitely deliberate step around him, rolling his water bottle between his palms. ] There's quite a bit more here than there was at the lab.

[personal profile] imsorey 2016-03-15 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Can fawns laugh? This one is chuckling a little. He can't help it, the quack was too much of a surprise.]

Maybe it's about everyone coming together to help each other out, since the birds seem to have a habit of misplacing all of their eggs like this.

[It doesn't sound exactly logical, but it is fun to think about.]
oneandmikleonly: (inch of snow; you're buried alive.)

Re: 5

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-03-15 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Don't laugh...!

[he clears his throat, grumpily, and tries to focus on the conversation, nudging another egg out of the pile.]

My question is, why does nothing on this island have sensible hands?
oneandmikleonly: (troubled spirits on my chest.)

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-03-15 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there's more to the lab, but they seemed pretty determined to get us out of there once they'd explained.

[he'll move towards the nearest shelf to cover his mild embarrassment, running his fingers carefully over the spines and raising an eyebrow. Gone Haunting, Back at Midnight? Monsters, Spooks, And Ghouls Oh My? Making "Spirits" Bright?]

...wow. Some theme, though.

[personal profile] eldritches 2016-03-15 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Probably to hide the potion creating process, among other things.

[ To say he's suspicious would probably be an understatement, but he's going to leave it at that as he assesses some books, himself. The theme doesn't surprise him, and it's exactly why he drank the potion in the first place. ]

Just what you'd expect of a place fashioned after Halloween, though.
oneandmikleonly: (calmer ocean or a sun.)

[personal profile] oneandmikleonly 2016-03-15 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense, though it's not...the most auspicious first impression.

[he frowns at the word and looks over, sidelong; it was the name of the town, obviously, and he'd heard it a few times since arriving, but he honestly doesn't have the background to make the connection.]

What exactly is Halloween, anyway?

They're probably under the assumption that everything is going smoothly for them, regadless, since the potion was a choice rather than a demand.

[ Ryousuke tilts his head a little, feeling the glance but not reacting as he flips through a book - Poltergeists and Interior Decorating. Funny. But after the question, he does look up, giving him his full attention again. ]

It's a holiday, celebrated during autumn. These days it's more of a commercial thing, with candy and costumes, though it varies depending on where you're living.

[ Thus far, Souji's... well, adjusted. This is, fortunately(?), not the strangest thing he's dealt with in the past year, so he's mostly shrugged about everything and just gone with it. It seems the wiser thing to do, anyways. So a few days into the trip, and he's just walking around town, getting a better look at things now that the excitement (and scares, for some people) has calmed down more.

But as he's walking down the street, hands in his pockets, he perks a little as he catches a note of disappointment from nearby. Rather than just walk off and leave her be, he instead approaches, curious and mildly concerned. After his time in Inaba, he's gotten to the point where he wants to make sure people are fine, even if they're strangers.

Who knows what kind of bonds he might make, if he can help them out somehow.

[Urp. Well this is certainly a bit of an embarassing situation, and for a brief moment she finds herself slightly red faced when she realizes she's not alone. She forces herself to regain some composure, shaking her head.] Ah-it's nothing serious, [she insists, giving a short wave.] ...something to work toward, [she mutters to herself under her breath.]

[ Raising his hands up in front of him, smile apologetic for catching her off guard. At least he didn't make her jump - he would've felt bad for that, especially since he's been a little jumpy himself lately. (Apparently a side effect of his own, but at least it's not too much trouble.) ] Nothing serious means there's something.

[ He looks up to track where she'd been looking, herself, and tilts his head a little when he sees the necklace. ] They sure have some interesting things here, huh.

Not necessarily, [she replies, though he's gentle enough in his questioning that she manages a smile nonetheless.

Even if. She's still short the cash required for what she's turning her attentions back to.

Fair. [ With a soft laugh, Souji lets that line drop for the meantime. Sometimes it's good to press things, but other times it's easier to just leave them be. In this case, it doesn't seem dire enough for the former.

Curious, he looks at the necklace for a moment longer before back to her.
] I kind of get that - there was a shop back home that sold some pretty interesting things, but not a lot of what I've seen here. What kind of things did your father sell?

He's a jeweler, [she answers.] I've seen many stones both polished and otherwise, but these ones seem more unique than that.
