Rules and FAQs
Be kind to other players:
We're all just here to have a good time and enjoy RPing with one another! Use good judgement and don't try and force anyone to RP something they don't want. Use common courtesy and manners. So let's all just enjoy ourselves here and be civil to one another. If you have an issue with someone, handle it like an adult. Don't resort to name calling or bullying. None of that will be tolerated.
If necessary, please come to the mod.You came to play:
You came to play your characters, not other people's characters. General rules of "not being a jerk" and not controlling other people's muses apply. Please no god-moding, info-moding, or meta-gaming. No one likes to be god-moded, so please refrain from doing it to others. Unless you have the express permission of another player, it's safer to avoid it at all costs.
When all else fails: Ask permission if you want to do anything major with another character. And please use common sense as to what that is.Three strikes and you're out:
There is a three strike policy in place for breaking any rules, inappropriate behavior, etc. After three strikes muns will be banned from the game and will not be allowed to reapply. Trying to reapply under a pseudonym will result in being instantly banned.
Mods have the right to ban players regardless of whether three strikes have been reached in more serious circumstances.
Harassment of other players will not be tolerated by any means.Mature Content:
Should your logs have any mature content, be it violent content or sexual content please put appropriate warnings on the log and lock them. Said content is more than acceptable here in Halloween Town, just place appropriate warnings for those who would otherwise wish to avoid it.Have a problem?
It happens but please be an adult and courteous. If you need help, feel free to come to a mod! We're here to help and find a reasonable solution. As we're not mind readers, we won't know anything is wrong unless you tell us.Have fun!
Role-playing is supposed to be fun! Plot and play away, enjoy yourself! If you have suggestions, ideas, or questions about what you'd like to see, just post it! Create character drama, have your characters make friends, enemies, and rivals. Go nuts! This is Halloween!

Who can join?
Halloween Town accepts characters from all sorts of genres: anime, manga, animated movies, live action movies, television, web comics, video games, etc. It also accepts OC characters.
Halloween Town does not accept AU characters, Canon OCs, or CRAU characters.
Halloween Town also does not accept doubles of the same character if they have similar enough histories/personalities.
For example: Snow White from Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Snow White from Once Upon a Time would be considered separate characters, or the Tenth Doctor and Eleventh Doctor would be considered separate characters, however Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon from the manga and Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon from the anime (90s or Crystal) would be considered the same person with similar enough histories and therefore, only one version of her can apply.
Furthermore, each character is a case-by-case situation. We understand that some characters can be the protagonists, yet have nothing in the way of history, or that characters with very little history can have a whole lot of personality. Applications will be judged individually. If the mods and app team feel that too much of the character is purely headcanon, or there is not enough within the series to provide information on the character, they will be considered Canon OCs and will not be accepted.
Halloween Town will not accept players under the age of 15 due to some mature content and the nature of the game. Lying about your age to get into the game will result in the player being banned from the game until they are old enough.AC Requirements?
To pass AC you will need a minimum of 20 comments from just your character for the specified month with a minimum of two different interactions with two different characters across at least two posts/logs. This can be done in a variety of ways! You can get comments from your posts, logs, threads, and inbox/voicemail posts. You can even use Test Drive Meme threads to supplement up to 10 comments for AC requirements. A thread must be a minimum of four comments to be counted for AC but you can use as many threads as necessary to meet this requirement.
Example: Character A and Character B - In a log thread of 5 comments
Character A and Character C - In a journal post thread of 5 comments
Character A and TDM Character - TDM thread of 10 comments
And any combination necessary to reach 20 from your character
When AC falls on the same month of the bi-monthly mandatory HMD, a link to your HMD comment will also be required to pass AC. Since we understand that life happens, if players cannot make AC, they will be allowed to ask for a strike and must make full activity the next two AC cycles to pass. Going on hiatus will not remove the AC strike requirement. In other words: if a character asked for a strike in April, they will need to make full AC in May and June. If they go on a long enough hiatus in either month, they will then need to pass full AC in June and July to be cleared of a strike.
If players do not reply to the AC and do not reply to the warning post and are not on official hiatus, they will be swept from the game and may not app that character again until two app cycles have passed.
HOWEVER! Characters will be rewarded for completing AC successfully! A complete AC will earn characters Holidollars (enough to allow the character to live comfortably but not in luxury). Providing extra AC of 15 comments with an entirely different character from those used in the actual proof can gain more powers to their monster abilities.Extra AC Requirements?
That's correct.
Extra AC (A thread of 15 comments from only your character with a third and different character than those used in activity proof) gives you points and each level of abilities is a certain amount of points, with abilities requiring more points as they go from beginner to master.
Players may not provide more than ONE Extra AC thread and it is the duty of the player to keep track of their own points. Mods will NOT keep track for you.
Each character will start at the most basic level REGARDLESS of whether or not they are that creature in their own canon. A 400 year old vampire is still going to be at the beginning if you pick vampire again as their monster. They can advance to the next level by providing extra activity during the AC. Extra activity is done by a point system and each level has a certain amount of points required. You CANNOT skip levels. Your character MUST go through each level of abilities before they can reach the highest.
There is certainly nothing stopping you from saving all your points and doing all the levels all at once. It's however you want to do it and easiest for you.
There are a total of four levels of abilities and powers. More information can be found on the monsters page.A mandatory bi-monthly game wide HMD?
Yes, there will be a bi-monthly and mandatory game-wide HMD. This is just a way for both players and mods to get some feed-back and notes. During months where AC and HMDs fall at the same time, the AC will require a link to your HMD thread. This is by no means a place for someone to rip someone apart. The HMD will be locked to members and will be watched carefully.
I need to go on hiatus!
We completely understand! Life happens and you need to be able to take care of it. So with that in mind, the maximum amount of time a player may go on hiatus is one month or 31 days. No extensions will be offered after 31 days, but please feel free to come talk to the mods, extenuating circumstances happen and we do understand that. For a player to be exempt from AC, you must have been on hiatus for at least two weeks within the AC period. We appreciate you checking in, but understand if you are unable to.
Do I need to reserve a character before I can apply?
Not at all. Applications are permanently open and processed every weekend allowing for an additional 72 hours to respond to revision requests. Applications are processed by the App Team with final decisions being made by the mod team. Reserves are just to give us a general number but are by no means mandatory. If you're worried that someone might apply for your character before you can finish the application, a reserve will guarantee you a spot five days after applications open. All reserves last five days after applications open and cannot be extended. If after the five days, you have still not put in your application, it can be challenged by other players.
How many characters can I play?
At this time, we are only allowing a player to have four characters in the game. New players can pick up two characters when first applying and then may only apply for one character per app cycle afterwards.
At the moment, players may NOT more than one character from the same canon. As the game is still starting out, we won't know yet the players and characters the game will attract. However, this may be subject to change in the future.
If your application is rejected, you will have to wait until the next app cycle to apply for this character. Please note: If you submit your application for the same character and it has been rejected twice already, you may not apply for this character any longer. You are still welcome to apply for another character. The App Team and Mods reserve the right to reject applications if the player has a history of harassment in prior games. My character is incredibly powerful, will their powers be taken away?
Actually no! Your character will have all their powers available to them. However, we do ask that you use them within reason. Anything that would involve mass destruction of buildings or mass NPC death MUST be cleared by the mods! Doing so without mod clearance will result in a strike. When it comes to player-to-player interaction, please check with the other players first, and remember IC Actions will have IC Consequences.
There is one exception to character's powers and abilities being taken away. If a character has the ability to travel through multiple dimensions by themselves, or has a tool that lets them do it, this will be taken away from them. Never fear though, they can still return home on their own during the new moon. What are the laws of this world?
The short answer is: it varies.
The long answer is:
Each holiday world will have IC consequences to different crimes. So while scaring and pranks and even some forms of murder may be perfectly acceptable in Halloween Town, it would be unheard of in Christmas Town. Whereas not kissing someone under the mistletoe is a serious offense in Christmas Town and means nothing in Easter Island.
Remember, there is no one to overthrow or fight so you can get back home. While ghouls and monsters are out and about, they're mostly harmless... mostly. Trying to overthrow the holiday leaders so you can be leader is something that can be discussed with mods, though it will have severe IC consequences.
Regular laws like theft, harassment of any kind, sexual assault, are still punishable by all the lands, things like death and murder are more grey areas depending on the land and we would recommend letting a mod know to work out the IC consequences. What's the Rule on 4th Walling?
In Halloween Town, we leave 4th walling up to the discretion of the player yours would technically be 4th walling. Unless stated otherwise by the mun, DO NOT 4th wall a character. It does not matter if your character would know the character canonly or not, respect the wishes of the other player and avoid the issue.
As for characters that would canonly know Jack Skellington and company, we have no issue with people knowing Jack and his story, seeing as they are considered quite famous on their own and do understand they're reaching out into the multi-verse and who knows what goes on there. Halloween Town functions exclusively in the universe of Nightmare Before Christmas, so while a Kingdom Hearts character may know Jack, for ease and to avoid a convoluted story-line, they will not be attached to the Kingdom Hearts universe at all.Can I pick up a character who is dead?
Yes, you most certainly can, and it is entirely your choice if you wish for them to be a ghost or spirit since ghosts are available monsters, or alive and well in Halloween Town.
Wait, monsters?
Uh well, about that! You see, the potion you took had an unintended side-effect. You actually turn into the creatures of the holidays. Not just vampires and mummies of Halloween Town, but snowmen and elves of Christmas Town, or rabbits and eggs of Easter Island, etc.
More information on available monsters can be found: here!
But don't worry! Every new moon, when the potion is at its weakest, you will turn back into yourself for a week and then go right back to being the monster you picked upon entering the game. What if my character is already a magical creature?
Since powers are not stripped when coming to Halloween Town, that means neither are character's original species/creature orientation. Please know that characters are not obligated to pick the same or nearest monster to what they are. If a character is a vampire in canon, it does not mean they need to be a vampire monster on top of their other vampiric abilities.
There is absolutely nothing stopping you from making what would essentially be a hybrid monster. This means that if your character is a werewolf in their own canon, they would still have all their abilities as a werewolf, but you could also choose to give them all the in-game monster abilities of a mummy. How that will play out on your character is entirely up to you. Some monsters are more severe physical changes than others, and some may even contradict the powers of your character. So please consider what monster your character will become carefully.
Just remember: Whatever monster you choose is the monster you remain the entire time in game. Only muses that have been dropped and picked up by a new mun are able to switch monster roles.Alright, but my muse isn't magical but they are an animal, what about that?
Just like with magical creatures/characters, muses that are animals (My Little Pony, Luna, Mickey and co., etc.) will not suddenly turn human. Rather, they will continue being in their animal form with the new monster abilities.
Can I pick up a dropped muse?
You most certainly can, and it is entirely your choice if you wish for them to remember their prior time in Halloween Town or have their memory completely blank. If you wish to go the latter route just assume the potion messed with their memory a bit.
Since my character came here voluntarily, can they leave that way as well?
This is actually a yes and no answer. When your character first arrives, the potion they took will have had unexpected results. It will prevent them from leaving until the new moon of every month. However, during the new moon, your character is free to travel between their world and back. Jack Skellington certainly has no intention of keeping you hostage (he learned his lesson after Sandy Claws)! Your character, will only be able to return through Halloween Town, so if your character is exploring other holidays, they won't be able to go back home from Easter Island or Valentine Village, they must return to Halloween Town if they want to go home.
My character is just got a new episode and I want to canon update:
That's more than fine! Since characters can come and go as they please, they can leave Halloween Town, go get canon updated, and then come back to the game but would remain the same monster you picked for them before the update. All we ask is that after a new movie/episode/chapter/etc. in the character's canon, you wait three weeks before canon updating so as to avoid instant spoilers.
How does time work?
Well, OOCly Halloween Town will have a 1:1 ratio. This is to keep with the new moons, holidays, and other events since the holidays connect to the real world. In game, the time in Halloween Town and the other holidays functions at a hyper rate. What might be days or even years in the holiday realm is only mere hours in the home of the characters. Time always goes quickly in the holidays, after all, it always seems like they're just around the corner and then suddenly they're upon us!
Are these the only holidays my character can visit?
Not at all! In fact, characters are encouraged to explore the Hitherlands. While the game is just starting out, we'll start with just the ones seen in the actual film plus one additional one. Within the Hitherlands, who knows what might be out there! Players are more than welcome to suggest all sorts of holidays: national, cultural, religious, or international! Some holidays will become actual worlds and doors, some will be just events with potential for yearly occurrence. If you suggest a holiday and it passes before we can get to it, we apologize in advance and hope you understand that sometimes holidays suggested also coincide with game events.
PLEASE NOTE: Official Holiday Doors will NOT be open for character exploration until it is officially introduced in a mod-run event! Once that holiday is introduced to the game, characters can return to it whenever they please as often as they please.
Questions about Arrival:
So what happens when I arrive in Halloween Town?
Well when your character arrives, they'll have gotten to come by choice. So whatever they may have had on them is what they brought with them. Since the bat left you with the potion to drink at a time of your choosing, you may even feel free to pack before coming to Halloween Town! However, things like cars, motorcycles, the TARDIS, and other vehicles will not be able to pass through. But give Dr. Finklestein some time and he might be able to make it so that those can pass through as well! (Please note, that this does not apply to robots, or mechanical characters, only to actual means of transportation.)
Your character is being given a chance to explore holidays and to explore the world as a whole! They can get a job, most jobs tend to be in helping the holidays get ready. By taking on jobs, your character can earn "Holidollars" which they can then use to spend on whatever they please in each village.Holidollars?
Yes. Although we don't want you to focus on a bank account for your character, these are still villages and towns and they still have currency. But jobs in the holidays are meant to be fun and varies from holiday to holiday. Christmas Town you might get a quick job making toys or gift wrapping, in Halloween Town it could be making Jack o' Lanterns or scaring children on Halloween. The jobs all relate to the holidays and there will even be a few events involving these very jobs! (Lord Eros, for example, is always horribly understaffed on Valentine's Day).
How is it I understand everyone perfectly?
Simple, you see it's the potion you drank. Although, if a character puts effort into it, they are able to write in their original language, though the potion seems to prevent them from speaking it except on the new moon.
Can my character die?
Yes they can, and death will be permanent here in Halloween Town. However, those who die in Halloween Town turn into spirits, poltergeists, and other forms of ghosts instead of shuffling off the mortal coil. So even if your character dies, they can now enjoy their after-life as a spirit! What does that mean when they travel to other holidays? Well, when they travel to other holidays, they'll still be a ghost, but it will be the ghosts fitting to that holiday. Visiting Patriot Hamlet will make your character a ghost of war, Valentine's Village makes you a ghosts of a lover spurned, St. Patrick's Hamlet turns you into a Banshee, so on and so forth.
So this is a fantasy world, what sort of technology IS there and will mine work?
Good question! In all the holidays there are aqueducts and sewers and they even have indoor plumbing. You will have toilets, baths, and showers available to you. Technology itself seems to be as advance as something you might find in the 1950s. There are a couple of exceptions to this!
There is the Jack o' Laptop which is a new invention from Dr. Finklestein and has the occasional glitch. Private posts become public, it records unexpectedly, and sometimes it will send messages to everyone BUT who you intended it to go to. He's still trying to work out the details. It's hard with only half a brain! This is how you will connect to the network and how you'll be able to make posts.
However, when you go to Christmas Town and New Years Metropolis where they seem to be far more advanced and are able to provide modern technology. The radio and televisions of each holiday only get what is produced in said holiday. So going to Christmas Town means nothing but watching Christmas specials and listening to Christmas music, Halloween Town is nothing but spooky melodies and horror films, Patriot Hamlet you can bet it's all about the founding fathers documentaries, Valentine's Village is the ooey-ist gooey-ist mushy love stories you'll ever see, and so on and so forth with each holiday. What is the Jack o' Laptop and what can it do?
The Jack o' Laptop is a brand new invention by Dr. Finklestein, resident mad genius scientist of the town. The Jack o' Laptop is orange in color (and comes only in one color) and round in shape like a pumpkin with various Jack o' Lantern face designs on the lid. It's able to do what an older laptop might, but don't overload it too much, there are still glitches in the system. It is able to play and record videos, connect to the latest news in each individual holiday, allow for blogs and even send phone calls. It also connects to the signals that the radios and television have in each holiday as mentioned above. The Jack o' Laptop isn't advanced enough to have anonymity. Seeing as Dr. Finklestein is still trying to get it to stop posting private information and chats and photos, anonymity is a long way coming.
Where can my character live?
While the other holiday leaders were quite kind in inviting people from around the multi-verse to come visit the holidays, they don't actually want you living in them. In fact, they made quite sure that there is no additional housing in their holidays for the new guests. Jack Skellington is, as usual, the exception. Plenty of new housing and apartments have been built to accommodate your stay here in Halloween Town! Hope you like dark colors! Halloween Town doesn't seem to do anything "bright" unless it's orange, purple, and yellow (not necessarily all at once). But while the apartments and houses seem to be dark and spooky, they're quite comfortable. You can furnish it and help keep you and whoever else lives with you living peacefully by earning holidollars.
Halloween Town domiciles range from apartments to houses to laboratories, closets, and under the bed of others.
Please do not have more than five people living in a single domicile as we want you to be able to branch out and interact with all sorts.
Even if characters want to create their own domicile, we ask that the limit of characters all living together is five. Can my character create their own business?
Yes they can, but they will need to fill out the forms on the Settings page.

The first question is regarding characters from the same canon; if I wished to eventually run two characters who were from the same canon, could I do so, provided they were distant enough in the series that they wouldn't seek each other out? (IE characters who have never ICly met, or characters that would ICly avoid each other until the end of time, etc etc)
The second question is regarding character age-would child characters be allowed provided the proper amount of care was employed in playing them (since not everyone is comfortable tagging children in certain situations, etc etc. A proper opt out page would be ready, in other words.)
And the third question, relating more to the game itself! When it comes to clothing, what sorts of things would be expected? We know what's available for housing and such, but what outfits would a character expect to find while buying themselves more than the same shirt they arrived in?
no subject
no subject
For your first question: At the moment, we are going to say no due to the game just starting and we aren't quite sure what to expect in terms of numbers and characters. However, this may change once we have a better idea after the game opens!
Second: Any character of any age is welcome. We already have a few children on the Test Drive Meme and at its core, Halloween is a holiday for kids. While we have some spooks and frights here and there, there is plenty of lighter content for them in this game that they wouldn't have to deal with anything too graphic or gory. It is your choice to have an opt-out permission post regarding the character but we will not be requiring of that of you. While muns are required to be 15 and over, characters are not.
Third: Clothes are Halloween-y just like everything else and vary from holiday to holiday. However, once more doors are open, there is nothing stopping a character from going to different holidays and buying clothes there and bringing it back to the Town. Also, characters are allowed to pack before coming to Halloween Town since they're coming here by choice, so any clothes brought from home are also fully allowed. We're not going to be strict on what clothes you can and can't have your character wear just be aware that just like in real life, it all requires money.
no subject
Gosh good thing I have someone who's likely to pack....While I'm at it though, I admit I'm a bit fuzzy on the matter of becoming monsters and switching back; does that basically mean that every month a character will be switching back and forth between human and monster every new moon, rather than staying a monster the entire time? Or is this an optional sort of deal? (What does that mean for characters who are trick or treaters, given their focus on creating costumes rather than looking too different outside skin tone?)
no subject
During the new moon, the potion the characters took is weakest, which means they go back to being human. Once the week of the new moon is over, they go right back to the monster type you picked (ex. vampire). You do not pick a new monster type. Only during the TDM are characters able to test out multiple monster types until they find the one they think fits best with their character.
There are only two ways a character can change the monster type: if the character is dropped and picked back up at a later date or if the character dies in game. Since death is permanent in game, dying in the game will turn them into a spirit/ghost type which they will remain during the duration of their stay in the game.
If a character is turned into a spirit, they have to start back at the newborn level regardless of the progress made in their other monster form.
no subject
I was actually asking more 'are we always x, or are we sometimes human instead of x' but you answered that question while explaining the rest there, so thank you!
Time to actually get going on the TDM nowno subject
That when characters go to other holidays, they become the monsters/creatures of THAT holiday and that's when they can change each time you go to that holiday. So right now, characters can visit Easter Island and choose from rabbits, chicks, ducklings, fawns, lambs, and egg spirits. Every time you visit Easter Island, you can turn into a different one each time with one exception. If your character is a spirit/ghost type, they can only turn into the ghost creature of that holiday (egg spirits in this example).
I hope that's more clear.
no subject
It actually does clear up another thing I was unsure of-I didn't realize it was free choice again on the other holidays, I'd assumed the creature we become in other holidays would be tied to the one they are in Halloween Town...
Thank you very much for adding this!
no subject
And not at all! Good luck on the TDM!

When the lycanthropes are fully in their animal form, say for the full moon where they don't have any control over it, do they have any say in what they do, or are they fully under the control of their animal nature and instincts? I would assume that they have at least a little control if they turned into one at will in order to change back out, but I'm not even a little sure on the full moon time.

I'M BACK-New question that just occurred to me; muses arrive by drinking the potion, yes?
What happens when a muse does not and has never had a mouth...or even a body for that matter? An AI that only really exists by voice, for example?

She's an actual character, from a video game, with a full personality and everything. It's a very unique existence that's used throughout the playing of that game, just. One that means she can't hold and drink a potion. Voice and the computer system is just unfortunately all she can interact with.

Without spoiling too much, she's the result of a brainscan of the human Catherine, moving on through the game separate from the original. Quite a lot happens and a LOT of development goes on (this is somewhat the game's message; the idea that circumstances around us shape who we are), so it's a character I'd like to at least consider.
I wanted to ask the question not just for myself however but also for other characters, since this is a roadblock that could apply to a lot of robotic characters as well.
no subject
Try not to focus so much on "how my character will consume this potion" and just understand the characters (most of them, in any case) are coming here by choice.

Thank you very much for putting up with my questions!

Question though, regarding the muse I'm debating apping. He's got a Complicated form of Multiple Personality Disorder. Would you mind at all if I apped in with one base journal, but had two others (one for each side personality) join the comms for icons? I kind of love my icons and 15 between three distinctly different in appearance personalities can be tricky.

And while we don't have a problem with it we would only be listing one on all of our pages such as the taken and player contact for simplicity and maintenance. We would also like to recommend DW Tools to help you as it does allow you to link imgur icons outside of the account.
We wish you the best of luck for your application.
